Water, trees, soil and energy - each of it precious to the other and by itself for the wellness of our dear planet. Each of these forming the concerns raised by the student leaders of the BPCL Kochi Refinery Energy Conservation clubs at the one day ‘ENCON Club Student Leaders Meet’ held on 29th November.
Ms.Terrin Rose of Gregorian Public School, Ernakulam shared her findings on the importance of energy conservation in the present context. Greevar Kodiyaril representing Government High School, Pazhamthottam expressed his concern about the need to preserve our environment. Ms Anitha K R of SNV Higher Secondary School, Paravur sparked the debate on the importance of proper waste management. Thereafter, student participants from various schools shared their views on the different ways to nurture Encon club activities. Nayana S.B, Anil, Sheeba Paul, Apoorva S Pai etc. thrilled the audience with their songs on environment protection.
Presiding over the meeting, Mr Neelakandan M, General Manager (Advisory Engineering) shared BPCL’s vision and appraised the gathering about the importance of energy both as a means of production and to enhance economic prosperity, personal comfort and quality of life. He reminded the youngsters that they should act as change agents to make energy conservation a reality and a way of life. Mr. Chacko M Jose, Chief Manager (Energy & Environment) detailed the students on how to acquire leadership skills and shared some tips for them to become good leaders.
In the invitation lectures that followed, Mr. P.C.Rajan Babu, Chief Electrical Inspector (Rtd), Kerala State Electrical Inspectorate elaborated on electrical safety aspects and the need for conserving energy. He was speaking on the topic: “Relevance of electrical safety and energy conservation”. Thereafter, Prof. V.N.Madhusoodanan of Jawaharlal College of Engineering and Technology, Ottapalam led a very interesting session on the topic “Know the ingredients of your daily consumables’. Each session was followed by interesting discussions to obtain greater clarity on all the relevant issues.
A coconut shell scientific handicrafts exhibition was also conducted for the benefit of the participants and it was another point of attraction for the participants.
Students also debated on the topic ‘World needs energy irrespective of the type of energy’ in which the students exposed the different threats and merits behind the use of various types of energy.
Later student participants engaged in different rounds of competitions like: Best speaker and Best singer. Ms. Apoorva S Pai of Cochin Refineries School bagged the Best Debator and Best Extempore Speaker prizes and Mr. Akshay Anilkumar of Thunchathacharya Vidyalayam, Kannur bagged the Best Singer prize. Shankar S Menon of BVM Girinagar bagged the second prize for debate and extempore speech and Sindhu Baby of St.Mary’s CGHS, Ernakulam bagged the second prize in the Singers contest.
The programme helped to infuse enthusiasm and encouragement among the encon club members to act as change agents. As shared by many of them, the event provided them an insight about the latest issues and challenges in the field of energy conservation and environment protection. At the close of the events, Mr. Saratchandra Babu, Senior Manager (Energy & Environment) thanked the participants for their active participation and gave away the prizes for the winners of the different competitions.
